Unlocking the True Wealth: What Does Jason Get in The Ultimate Gift?

At the start of The Ultimate Gift—the beloved novel by Jim Stovall and its popular film adaptation—spoiled, entitled, and directionless Jason Stevens expects a massive payout when his billionaire grandfather, Howard “Red” Stevens, passes away. While the rest of the greedy family members receive immediate, multi-million dollar checks that only feed their vanity and entitlement, Jason receives something entirely different: nothing—at first.

Instead of cash, Red leaves his grandson a series of posthumous video instructions detailing a grueling, year-long trial. To earn any part of the estate, Jason must complete twelve monthly assignments, known as “gifts”.

The Twelve Monthly Gifts

Each task is designed to strip away Jason’s arrogance and teach him foundational life lessons:

  • The Gift of Work: Experiencing hard physical labor on a Texas cattle ranch.
  • The Gift of Money: Learning the true value of a dollar by distributing limited funds to people in desperate need.
  • The Gift of Friends: Finding a genuine friend who cares about him, not his bank account.
  • The Gift of Learning: Discovering the joy and necessity of education.
  • The Gift of Problems: Realizing that problems are not obstacles, but opportunities for growth.
  • The Gift of Family: Re-evaluating relationships and discovering deep familial bonds.
  • The Gift of Laughter: Finding joy even in the midst of hardship.
  • The Gift of Dreams: Clarifying a vision for the future.
  • The Gift of Giving: Experiencing the unmatched fulfillment of serving others.
  • The Gift of Gratitude: Cultivating a thankful heart.
  • The Gift of a Day: Learning to live fully and intentionally in the present.
  • The Gift of Love: Understanding that love is the most powerful force on Earth.

Through these trials—and deeply impacted by his friendship with a young girl named Emily and her mother Alexia—Jason undergoes a radical personal transformation.

What is “The Ultimate Gift” in the End?

When Jason successfully completes all twelve tasks, he finally receives his financial inheritance: billions of dollars in assets, control of the Stevens empire, and the entirety of Red’s remaining fortune.

However, the story makes it clear that the physical money is secondary. The true “ultimate gift” is Jason’s personal redemption.

Rather than using the multi-billion dollar fortune to fund a superficial lifestyle of luxury as he would have done at the beginning of the story, Jason uses his wealth and newly discovered wisdom to launch a massive philanthropic legacy. He establishes a state-of-the-art medical and children’s facility (inspired by Emily, who tragically loses her battle with leukemia).
