How to Add Your Own Custom Sound and Music to Spotify
Have you ever wanted to listen to an unreleased track, a custom remix, a rare live recording, or your own original music alongside your favorite mainstream hits? While you can’t upload random audio files directly into Spotify’s public servers for everyone to stream, Spotify has a built-in feature called Local Files that lets you merge your personal audio library directly into your playlists.
Whether you’re an aspiring bedroom producer testing out a mix or just someone with a hard drive full of rare MP3s, here is how you can seamlessly add your own sound to Spotify on both desktop and mobile.
Step 1: Prepare Your Audio Files
Before diving into Spotify, make sure your audio files are formatted correctly. Spotify natively supports common uncompressed and compressed audio formats like MP3, M4A, MP4, and FLAC (though DRM-protected files or standard WAV/OGG files straight out of certain editors may need a quick conversion to MP3 first).
- Gather all the audio files you want to add into a dedicated folder on your computer (for example, name it “Spotify Custom Music”).
- Clean up the file details (metadata). Tag the artist name and track title correctly so Spotify doesn’t display them as a jumble of random numbers.
Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop
The easiest way to import your music is through the Spotify desktop app (Windows or Mac), which acts as the control center for syncing your custom sounds.
- Open the Spotify desktop app (this feature does not work on the web player).
- Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down until you find the Library or Local Files section.
- Toggle on Show Local Files.
- Under “Show songs from,” click Add a source and select the folder where you stored your custom audio files.
Once completed, a new folder named Local Files will appear in your Spotify Library sidebar. Click on it, and you’ll see all your custom tracks ready to play.
Step 3: Add Your Custom Songs to a Playlist
To listen to your custom sounds organized the way you want—and to sync them to your phone—you need to drop them into a playlist.
- Create a brand-new playlist on Spotify (or open an existing one).
- Go to your Local Files library.
- Drag and drop your custom tracks from the Local Files list directly into your new playlist.
Step 4: Sync Your Custom Sounds to Your Phone (iOS & Android)
If you want to play your custom tracks on the go using your smartphone, you can sync them wirelessly. (Note: This requires a Spotify Premium subscription).
- Make sure your phone and your computer are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Spotify on your phone and go to Settings and privacy > Apps and devices, then toggle on Local audio files (on iOS/Android).
- Open the specific playlist on your phone that contains your custom local tracks.
- Tap the Download button (the down-arrow icon) for that playlist.
Spotify will pull the files over your local Wi-Fi network. Within a few moments, your custom tracks will download and play natively on your phone!
Alternative: Publishing Music for Everyone
If you are an artist looking to upload your music so that anyone worldwide can search for it and stream it on Spotify, the Local Files method won’t work. Instead, you’ll need to go through a music distribution service (such as DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, or Landr). These platforms deliver your professionally mixed audio files, cover art, and metadata directly to Spotify’s official database, letting you set up an official artist profile.
