Turn Your Favorite Track Into Your Ringtone: A Step-by-Step Guide
Tired of the default marimba or classic phone ring? Setting a song you actually love as your ringtone is one of the easiest ways to give your phone some personality. Whether you are rocking an iPhone or an Android, here is how to turn your favorite track into your custom ringtone in just a few minutes.
Step 1: Pick and Save Your Audio File
Before you can set a song, you need the actual audio file accessible on your device.
- For iPhone users: You can use audio files saved directly in your Files app (unprotected MP3 or M4A files work best).
- For Android users: Download or transfer the MP3 file of your song directly into your phone’s internal storage, specifically under the Downloads or Audio/Ringtones folder.
Step 2: Trim Your Favorite Part
Phones typically limit ringtones to 30 seconds, so you will want to isolate the absolute best part—usually the chorus or an iconic intro.
- On iPhone: GarageBand (a free Apple app) is your best friend here. Import your song into a project, trim the track down to under 30 seconds, and long-press the project to share/export it directly as a ringtone.
- On Android: You can use a lightweight app like Ringtone Maker from the Google Play Store to open your music file, use the sliders to pick your favorite section, and hit save.
Step 3: Apply It to Your Calls
Once your custom audio clip is saved and formatted, it is time to make it official.
- Setting it up on iPhone: Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, and select your newly exported track from the top of the list.
- Setting it up on Android: Go to Settings > Sound & Vibration > Phone Ringtone, and pick your custom file. Alternatively, you can open your music/file manager app, tap the three dots next to your edited song, and select “Set as ringtone.”
Pro Tip: Pick a segment that starts with a strong hook so you don’t miss the beginning of the call while it’s ringing!
