The future of Pandora is mapped out far into the future, and while the journey through the franchise takes time, the arrival date for the final planned chapter of James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga is officially locked in.

The Official Release Schedule

Disney has slated Avatar 5 for release on December 19, 2031.

Getting to that point requires a multi-step journey across the next several years. The production timeline for the massive performance-capture and CGI-heavy sequels spans nearly a decade, with each installment arriving every few years:

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash (Avatar 3): December 19, 2025
  • Avatar 4: December 21, 2029
  • Avatar 5: December 19, 2031

What Makes Avatar 5 Special?

While details under wraps are heavily guarded by James Cameron and 20th Century Studios, producer Jon Landau has previously revealed a major narrative twist for the fifth film: a portion of the story will briefly leave Pandora behind and visit Earth.

The contrast between the lush, bioluminescent ecosystem of Pandora and a depleted, ecologically strained Earth is set to bring the overarching themes of environmentalism and colonization full circle. For the Na’vi characters, experiencing humanity’s home planet firsthand promises a profound shift in perspective, concluding the massive arc that began with Jake Sully’s arrival on Pandora back in 2009.
